Curriculum Overview

Term 1

Week 5

Maths

This week we have been/will:

  • Use 10s and 1s on the number line to 100
  • Estimate numbers on a number line.
  • Compare objects (< > =)
  • Compare numbers (< > =)

English

This week we have been:

  • Learning the story of The Little Red Hen
  • Using capital letters and full stops.
  • Writing on the line.
  • Writing sentences with nouns and verbs in.
  • Re-read writing and check for any improvements we can make.

Week 4

Maths

This week we have been/will:

  • Partition numbers flexibly. For example knowing that 52 = 50 + 2; 52 = 40 + 12; 52 = 30 + 22
  • Write numbers in expanded form. e.g. 53 = 50 + 3
  • Count in 10s on a number line to 100

English

This week we have been:

  • Writing about penguins
  • Using our writing skills of capital letters and full stops.
  • Writing on the line.

Week 3

Maths

This week we have been/will:

  • Recognising Tens and Ones. We have been working on identifying how many Tens and Ones a number has, how we know and what that makes the total of the number.
  • Partitioning numbers to 100. To do this we have been splitting numbers into their Tens and Ones. e.g. if we have the number 42 we have been splitting it into 4 Tens and 2 Ones.
  • Writing numbers to 100 in words. We will be working on writing numbers as words and understanding that this is another way to communicate the number we mean. We will be trying hard to ensure that we spell the words correctly and will have word banks around us. We will also look for any patterns in the numbers that will help us spell the words.
  • Flexibly partition numbers to 100. To do this we will be splitting the same number in a range of different ways. For example we will be splitting 42 into 40 and 2; 30 and 12; 20 and 22; 10 and 32. This still makes 42 as a total but it shows that we can split it in different ways.

English

This week we have been:

  • Changing our Runaway Iceberg story to make it our own. We have been making changes to it and drawing our changes.
  • We will be writing our story, showing off our writing skills.
  • We will then be reading our story to small groups of our peers and an adult.

Week 2

Maths

This week we have been:

  • Counting up to 100 by making groups of 10 first. When we do this we count in 10s until there are no Tens left. Then we count on from that number in 1s until there are no Ones left.
  • Using place value charts. We have been using place value charts to sort numbers into their Tens and Ones. When we have done this we have focused on the value of each digit.

English

This week we have been:

  • Making small changes to The Runaway Iceberg. We have changed the names of the penguins and some other smaller details. We then practiced writing sentences from the story.
  • Using the word because to join clauses (ideas). We have learnt that the word because is used when we are giving an explanation about why something has happened/is happening/will happen. We have been learning that because is used in the middle of a sentence.
  • Using the word but to join clauses (ideas). We have learnt that the word but is used when we are giving another point of view. We have been learning that but is used in the middle of a sentence.
  • Writing our story with our changes. We have needed to remember our writing skills - especially our basic skills of capital letters and full stops.

Week 1

Maths

This week in Maths we have been:

  • Using numbers to 20. Remembering how to write the numbers and the order that they are in. We have been ensuring that we write eighteen as 18 and not 81 or 80.
  • Counting objects to 100 by counting the 10s first when they have been grouped for us. When we have done this we have looked to see how many groups of 10 there are, then counted on from this to count the 1s.

English

This week we have been:

  • Learning the story of The Runaway Iceberg. We have written sentences about it using full stops and capital letters.
  • Using adjectives to describe nouns. We have been learning that adjectives are describing words that we use with nouns (naming words). We have learnt that adjectives go in front of the noun to add more detail. We know that they make it more interesting for the reader and help the reader to picture what we are writing in their mind.
  • Using adjectives in sentences. We have practiced applying our knowledge of adjectives to sentences. We have practiced pausing our sentence before we write the noun, considering if it could have an adjective to add detail and adding one when appropriate. We know we then carry on as normal. We have been learning that we don't need to use an adjective for every noun and have to choose for ourselves when we will use one.
